Abstract Electronically assisted recruiting and online interview vs. paper-pencil-recruiting and CATI-interview in a customer satisfaction survey.The infas Institute for Applied Social Sciences (Institut für angewandte Sozialwissenschaft GmbH) conducts for the Deutsche Bahn AG comprehensive customer satisfaction surveys twice a year. Therefore, railway customers are recruited on site in the areas of railway stations and mass transit to interview them by phone a few days later. In order to simplify this method, an electronically assisted alternative with subsequent online-interview was tested in an experimental design with 1,100 respondents. The interviewers used PDAs with a GSM-card for the recruiting. The respondents' addresses were directly fed into the PDA and immediately transmitted to a central server, which directly again sent a welcome email to the participants including a link to the respective online-questionnaire. This online-questionnaire matched the otherwise applied CATI-questionnaire to a wide extent. Since the participants could decide in the recruiting phase whether they wanted to be interviewed online or by phone, and nonrespondents of the online-questionnaire were additionally contacted via CATI after some time elapsed, the design provides results for all combinations of the recruiting and survey alternatives. This conceptual design supplies statements concerning the effects of the recruiting alternative as well as the survey method, which have been tested in multivariate procedures. Additionally, results from the collateral "classic" survey with more than 24,000 respondents can be consulted for comparison. Yet, the realised samples (return rate and selectivity) and analysed results (rating pattern) are different. On the one hand, target persons could be motivated to participate by electronic recruiting and subsequent online-interview, who would presumably have refused participating in the "classic" survey. On the other hand, target groups can be identified, who are exclusively willing to be interviewed by phone, in spite of internet availability. Moreover, online-respondents answer more positive than CATI-respondents even when checking the sample-structure. Besides, effects can be detected, resulting from the optical design of the online-questionnaire due to the implementation of combined satisfaction and saliency scales in long item batteries. These results are completed by perceptions of a short follow-up survey, where the participants were asked to assess their interview situation. The overall results recommend a combined design of online and CATI method to improve the sample's quality.
Abstract - optional Elektronisch gestützte Rekrutierung und Online-Interview vs. Paper-Pencil-Rekrutierung und CATI-Interview in einer KundenzufriedenheitsbefragungDas infas Institut für angewandte Sozialwissenschaft erstellt für die Deutschen Bahn AG zweimal jährlich umfassende Kundenzufriedenheitsstudien. In den Bereichen Personenbahnhöfe und Nahverkehr werden hierzu Bahnhofskunden vor Ort rekrutiert und einige Tage später telefonisch befragt. Um dieses Verfahren zu vereinfachen, wurde in einem experimentellen Design mit 1.100 Befragten eine elektronisch gestützte Variante mit einem anschließenden Online-Interview geprüft. Bei der Rekrutierung setzen die Interviewer PDAs mit einer GSM-Karte ein. Die Adressen der Probanden wurden direkt in das Gerät eingegeben und sofort an einen zentralen Server verschickt, der an die Teilnehmer wiederum unmittelbar eine Begrüßungsemail mit einem Link zu dem entsprechenden Online-Fragebogen versandte. Dieser Online-Fragebogen entsprach weitgehend dem ansonsten verwendeten CATI-Fragebogen. Da die Teilnehmer bei der Rekrutierung entscheiden konnten, ob sie online oder per Telefon befragt werden möchten und Nichtausfüller des Online-Fragebogens nach einiger Zeit zusätzlich über CATI kontaktiert wurden, liefert das Design Ergebnisse für alle Kombinationen aus den Rekrutierungs- und Erhebungsvarianten. Diese Konzeption liefert Aussagen zu den Effekten der Rekrutierungsvariante sowie der Erhebungsform, die in multivariaten Verfahren untersucht wurden. Zusätzlich können vergleichend Ergebnisse aus der parallel laufenden "klassischen" Befragung mit über 24.000 Befragten herangezogen werden. Es ergeben sich Unterschiede in den realisierten Stichproben (Rücklauf und Selektivität) und den erhobenen Ergebnissen (Bewertungsmuster). Einerseits konnten mit der elektronischen Rekrutierung und dem anschließenden Online-Interview Zielpersonen für die Studienteilnahme gewonnen werden, die sich bei der klassischen Form voraussichtlich nicht beteiligt hätten. Andererseits können Zielgruppen identifiziert werden, die trotz Internetverfügbarkeit ausschließlich zu einem telefonischen Interview bereit sind. Darüber hinaus zeigt sich, dass im Online-Interview auch bei einer Kontrolle der Stichprobenzusammensetzung positiver bewertet wird als im telefonischen Interview. Zusätzlich können Effekte nachgewiesen werden, die aus der optischen Gestaltung des Online-Fragebogens bei dem Einsatz von kombinierten Zufriedenheits- und Wichtigkeitsskalen in langen Itembatterien resultieren. Ergänzt werden diese Ergebnisse durch die Erkenntnisse aus einer kurzen Nachbefragung zur Bewertung der Befragungssituation durch die Teilnehmer. Im Gesamtergebnis ergibt sich die Empfehlung für ein kombiniertes Verfahren aus Online- und CATI-Erhebung, um zu einer verbesserten Stichprobenqualität zu gelangen.
